Real Stories
Domestic Violence Solutions received a very special letter in early 2016 from a survivor who stayed at our emergency shelter four years ago. Her letter begins, “I do not know you, but I want you to know that I am thinking of you,” and was written to uplift and encourage the clients in our shelter and all survivors of domestic abuse. Here is an excerpt:
I want to tell you there is hope. I want to tell you that my struggle with abuse was not uncommon. What is uncommon are the level of resources in this community, the number of organizations and programs that exist to help you on your journey, the village and people that surround you even now, though you may not be able to see each of them physically, and their impact on your life may be just on the horizon … or weeks, months, years in the future. There are so many people who want you to get through this, heal, and move forward to live a happy and fulfilling life. This is not a small thing. This collective concern and philanthropy can change your life.
After finding safety and support through Domestic Violence Solutions for Santa Barbara County, this amazingly resilient mom continues to take loving care of her sons, has secured a home, is excelling in her career and is enrolled as a high achieving student at Santa Barbara City College.
As a very talented artist, to accompany her letter, she also painted a beautiful picture of a phoenix to represent transformation from a life of abuse. With her letter and painting, she encourages victims to "rise above the ashes, embrace your beauty, strength, power and abilities."
We believe you are that person she writes about who wants to help victims of domestic violence heal and move forward to live happy and fulfilling lives. For that reason, please consider making a donation to Domestic Violence Solutions, to continue helping our most vulnerable victims stay safe and out of harm’s way. Thank you for your support!
